Tube Sponge
The Tube sponge breathes oxygen and gets it from the seawater. The seawater flows down the tube and through the mesohyl. The mesohyl is the inner tissue of the sponge. The choanocyte cells within the mesohyl tissue absorbs the oxygen that is present in the water. This allows the tube sponge to breathe, however there is no organ for respiration.
Demospongiae sponge
The demospongiae sponge's respiratory system begins with pores called ostia that bring water into the spongilla. The water flows throughout the spongilla and is moved by cells called choanocytes. The cells contain flagella which are whip-like structures that move around and push water through the sponge. As water is pushed throughout the sponge, oxygen is brought to the sponge while waste and carbon dioxide are removed.
Calcarea sponge
Sponges do not have a distinct respiratory organ, therefore they must use different parts of its structure to breathe. The choanocyte cells within the mesohyl tissue absorbs the oxygen that is present in the water. They are structured similarly to coral and this gives an advantage for respiration because it allows them to absorb the oxygen from the water at many different points. The flow of water throughout the body allows for the exchange of gases.
